Safari Overview

On the first and third nights, you will sleep in Sable and Shipandani hides, where a mattress and simple bedding are provided. The focus here is on adventure and whilst comfortable, be advised that there are no shower facilties at the hides. Toilet facilities are provided. On the second and fourth nights you stay in Restcamps in chalets with en-suite facilties and air-conditioning where beds, toilet, hot shower and basic toiletries are provided.

Photography: If you are a casual photographer, you will love this trip! Both mammals and birds are easy to take pictures of, and because the Kruger Park is home to such a big diversity of species that are, tame and easily seen, there are plenty of opportunities for the casual photographer to indulge and enjoy shooting. It is important to be aware that the focus of this safari is not the photography, so if you are a serious photographer, remember that you will be sharing a vehicle with others and bumps and general movement can and should be expected.

What to bring with: Cool comfortable clothing; swimwear; sandals or other comfortable shoes during summer months. During winter months at least one warm jacket, gloves and a beanie for drives is recommended. Temperatures on an open safari vehicle can be very cold, especially with an added wind chill factor. Binoculars; camera; sunscreen; mosquito repellent; hat; spending money (can be cash or credit card); any personal medication and toiletries.

What to expect: The first and third nights at the hides have the potential to provide a lot of excitement. Along with your guide, there is nobody else around. The hides are protected from wild animals so if you listen to your guide and stay within the confines of the hide area, you will be perfectly safe. Lion and other large game such as hippo, leopard, buffalo and elephant do on occasion get very close to the hides and provide for a lot of excitement.

Bedding at the hides is provided but be advised it is basic and cannot be deemed luxurious.

What to Expect

Day 1 – Johannesburg to Phalaborwa Gate and on to Sable Hide

Your transfer to the Kruger National Parks Phalaborwa gate will take approximately 6 hours. After lunch in the town of Phalaborwa, you will be met at the gate by your guide, and transfer into our open vehicle for the start of your safari. The afternoon is spent on game drive inside the Kruger looking for animals and birds and taking a few less travelled 4x4 routes, the adventure starts!

Later in the afternoon, you will arrive at Sable Hide. After unpacking and getting settled in, cold drinks are enjoyed at the fire, whilst the sun sets, and you and your guide are literally the only people for many kilometres around. Listen for lions roaring, leopards, hyena, hippo, elephant and many nocturnal birds as you gather around the fire and start preparing dinner.

Everyone sleeps inside the hide, which is protected from wild animals yet allows you to experience and hear everything happening in the bush around you.

Toilet facilities are provided but please be advised there are no shower facilities for this night. Dinner included

Day 2 – Sable Hide to Letaba Restcamp

Your wake up call is early, the fire has already been started and coffee is served. After packing the vehicle we leave the hide, spending the entire morning driving inside the Kruger Park searching for wild animals and enjoying the scenery. We stop for breakfast and continue our drive down to Letaba Restcamp, arriving in the early afternoon. After checking in you have the rest of the day free to clean up and enjoy a hot shower. Your guide is available for an afternoon drive around the Letaba area if you wish.

Dinner is served at your chalet, prepared by your guide whilst you relax at the fire. Breakfast and Dinner included

Day 3 – Letaba to Shipandani Hide

A relaxed morning, as you wake up at your leisure, enjoy a last warm shower and head off back into the bush.

Again, most of the day is spent driving around Kruger in search of animals and like the first night, you arrive at Shipandani hide late in the afternoon. Shipandani is situated centrally, close to Mopani Restcamp, on the banks of the Shipandani River. There are hippo visible from the hide and they generally tend to advertise their presence until quite late into the night.

It’s a truly wonderful experience to be in the bush where animals roam freely, yet you are all alone. A sense of excitement and trepidation, but most of all priveledge.

Your guide prepares dinner at the fire, and like the Sable Hide, there are only toilet facilities, showers are not available on this night. Breakfast and Dinner included

Day 4 – Shipandani to Satara Restcamp

After an early start you make your way south down to Satara Restcamp, arriving in the early afternoon. After checking in, having lunch, and freshening up, we depart on a game drive exploring the region around Satara camp, returning in the late afternoon. Dinner is prepared at your chalet, under the stars, discussing the last few days adventures. Breakfast and Dinner included

Day 5 – Satara Restcamp to Johannesburg

Your safari may be over, but for those traveling back to Johannesburg there is the excitement of visiting the 3rd largest green canyon in the world, waterfalls, enjoying spectacular views and finishing off a tour by visiting an area that is an absolute must see when touring South Africa.

En-route we will stop for lunch and look to get back into Johannesburg in the late afternoon. Breakfast included

Trip Considerations

Pace: This is a moderately paced safari, where on day 2 and 4 you will awake early and spend a lot of time sitting in our open vehicle driving through the Kruger National Park. Game drives at Restcamps are available but not compulsory and if you would prefer to spend your time relaxing at the Restcamp, that is perfectly acceptable.

Climate: The Kruger Park is at an average altitude of around 350m above sea level and is within a summer rainfall area. The summer months (October to April) can be warm to hot and balmy. Late afternoon and evening thundershowers can be expected. The winter months (May to August) are dominated by clear skies and warm weather. Early mornings and evenings can be cool and even chilly. Rain is not expected during these months. It is advisable to choose a departure date that suits the climate you would prefer
